Check out current gas prices around the country - Energy Information Administration (EIA).
EIA is the premier source for current U.S. gasoline and diesel pump prices. Each month, the
EIA places an updated Microsoft Excel spreadsheet on its Web site that contains data from the Short-Term Energy
Outlook (STEO). This report provides information on several energy sources, including gasoline. On this Web page
you will see a line of text that looks like:
The XXXXXXX spreadsheet from the published forecast excel
file aaaaaaa.xls
where XXXXXXX
is the current Month of the year and, aaaaaaa
is the name of the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. If you click on this link a spreadsheet will open on your PC
(this may take a few minutes if you are using a dial up modem). Once the file is open, look at the bottom of the
spreadsheet at the tabs, and click on the tab that says Gasoline. The average price for regular gasoline is provided
on the row entitled: Pump price of motor gasoline: self-service, regular grade, EIA survey (Cents/Gal).”
Initially, each column of the spreadsheet presents the historical monthly cost of regular gasoline. As you cursor to
the right of the spreadsheet you will see the column headings change color, these are the forecast prices. Of course
each month’s gasoline price is a monthly average, higher or lower costs could occur within any month.
A Primer on Gasoline Prices.
Ever wonder what makes up all the costs in a gallon of gasoline? This EIA information sheet presents an excellent
explanation on what makes up what you pay for each gallon or liter of gasoline.
